ANOTHER AMERICA

Apr. 2024
Phillip Toledano’s book Another America, published by L’Artiere, draws on historical surrealism to describe a project that tells a fictional story set in New York City.
It is a journey into the 1940s, reinvented through artificial intelligence and the stories of John Kenney, a writer for The New Yorker, prompting a reflection on the American political situation in a country consumed by conspiracy theories.
Toledano uses AI to create scenarios that hybridize past and present, challenging photography itself through image manipulation. The result is a series of visions: metropolitan jungles torn apart by climate change; balloon suits; cars upholstered in animal fur or flying between the skyscrapers of the Big Apple; exotic animals navigating sudden floods among yellow cabs and New York diners.
